Daniel Heckel

drums and

electronic percussion

Daniel Heckel was first introduced to drums at the age of 4, when his father would play a live video of The Who with Simon Phillips on drums.  Daniel would sit and bang away on the coffee table with his fingers to the rhythm of the music.  From there, he would set up pots and pans on the kitchen counter to act as makeshift drums until he finally received his first drum set, a CB700 International kit, in 1994.

Daniel taught himself to play along to Aerosmith and Nirvana cassette tapes in his parents' garage.  Things finally started to take off when he discovered Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy.  After purchasing every instructional video he could get his hands on, Daniel finally began to develop his own style.  He learned odd-time signatures and creative drumming from Mike Portnoy and Gavin Harrison, a more groove-oriented style from studying Carter Beauford, how to build and progress a drum part from disecting Neil Peart parts, and how to rock out by listening to Nicko and other metal drummers.

Daniel Heckel has played with several bands in North Carolina, including Resolution Effect, Float, PreDestination, and Something Wicked.  He found his current home in Piece of Time in 2014 and not looked back since.
